New Teen Releases for the Month of October

This fall is an exciting time in the world of Young Adult Literature.  With the release of highly-anticipated sequels, installments, and conclusions to a number of popular series, months (and even years) of eager, impatient waiting will finally be rewarded across several fandoms.

Elaborate theories, feverish discussions, and futile online appeals to authors will all come to an eerie halt as frequently-visited blogs and forums will suddenly be deserted.  Fans everywhere will grab a coveted copy of the precious book and place themselves into temporary solitary confinement, far away from friends, family, and spoiler-prone social media. Some will inhale a book that they’ve been awaiting for a full year in a matter of hours.   Those in the midst of a series will find themselves with yet another cliffhanger and another year to wait, while others will be left with the realization that their beloved series has come to an end.

Here are two of October’s most anticipated books:

Allegiant by Veronica Roth

This is the final book in the very popular Divergent  trilogy, a dystopian series that takes place in a barren, future Chicago (author Veronica Roth is originally from Naperville, Illinois).  The action continues where Insurgent left off, calling alliances and loyalties into question after the startling revelations from the last book’s denouement.  Over the summer, filming for the movie version of the trilogy took place in downtown Chicago.  With the first film out next Spring, it will certainly be interesting to see how clever set designs and CGI will transform the city into an eerie dystopia.

The House of Hades by Rick Riordan

The fourth and penultimate book in the Heroes of Olympus series, this book follows the nail-biting, hair-pulling cliffhanger of The Mark of Athena.  Fans of this series will have another year to wait before the series reaches its completion in the fifth book, The Blood of Olympus.  For many, the impending conclusion to the series is bittersweet, as fans have been following Percy Jackson and his friends since 2005.  Percy Jackson was first introduced in The Lightning Thief (2005), the first book from Riordan’s original pentalogy, Percy Jackson  & The Olympians.  But the ride isn’t over quite yet, and The House of Hades will surely have another of Riordan's famous cliffhangers!
