Installing the OverDrive app on a Kindle Fire

Kindle Fire owners can always download “Kindle format” ebooks from Media on Demand, but if you install the “OverDrive” app you’ll get additional options: access to EPUB ebooks (not all ebooks are available in Kindle format); access to MP3 audiobooks; and a streamlined checkout (no need to login to Amazon). Follow these directions to get started:

  1. From the Home Page of your Kindle Fire, select the Apps tab.
  2. In the Apps menu select the Store button in the upper right hand corner.
  3. Use the search box at the top of the screen to search for “OverDrive”. (Note: you must be connected to a wireless network or data plan.)
  4. Tap “Download.” If prompted, enter the password for your Amazon account.
  5. Once the app downloads, it will be located on your Apps bookshelf. Tap the logo to open the app.
  6. If you want to read your ebooks on multiple devices (for example, a Kindle Fire and a Mac computer), click on “Sign In.” If not, click on “Do this later.”
  7. Authorize the OverDrive app with an Adobe ID. (If you don’t have one, click on “Get a free Adobe ID.”)
  8. Tap the menu button (three lines surrounded by a square) at the bottom of the screen.
  9. Tap the “Get Books” option.
    1. Note: If this is your first time, you will need to Add a Library by tapping Add a Library at the bottom of the screen, and searching for your zip code.
    2. Tap the name of your library.
    3. Tap the star next to Media on Demand. This will save it for your next login.
  10. Tap the Media on Demand icon.
  11. Login to your Media on Demand account (select library, and then enter library card number and SWAN PIN).
  12. Find an eBook or Audiobook that you want to download by tapping Search near the upper right-hand corner of the screen. (Note: while using the OverDrive app, you must choose the EPUB format for ebooks and the MP3 format for audiobooks. Other formats will not work with this app.)
  13. When you find a book you would like to read (or listen to), tap the book cover.
  14. Tap either Borrow (if the item is available immediately) or Place Hold (if the item is currently checked out.)
  15. Tap Download.
  16. If multiple formats appear, choose either EPUB (for ebooks) or MP3 (for audiobooks).
  17. Tap Confirm & Download.
  18. After the book has downloaded, tap the Menu button (in OverDrive) and select Bookshelf. (Note: that the ebook will not appear on the Kindle’s bookshelf. You must read it using the OverDrive app.)
  19. Click the title, and begin reading. Enjoy!
