Tinley Park Public Library has a Seed Library! The library contains various types of seeds, including herbs, vegetables, and flowers. Seed packets do not have to be checked out and do not require a library card to take. The Seed Library is intended to help build a culture of self-reliance and resource sharing within the community. 

Benefits of Sharing Seeds

→ Encourages sustainable practices at no or low cost 

→ Preserves and protects the biodiversity of plants and food crops 

→ Provides access to a unique variety of seeds


How It Works 

Availability

  • The Seed Library will be available year-round. However, the library cannot guarantee the availability of certain seeds year-round. Seeds will be restocked when available.
  • Seeds are available on a first-come, first-served basis. 
  • Patrons are encouraged to take up to five seed packets.  

Donations

  • The library will accept seed donations submitted with a completed Seed Donation Form, which can be found on the Seed Library shelves. Donations will be added to the collection at the discretion of library staff.  

Information Provided

  • Seed packets will contain information including common name, seed type, variety, planting depth, days to germinate, days to harvest, required sunlight, and packing year. 
  • The library will provide educational material on each type of seed and information on seed saving. Additional gardening resources will be made available.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to donate seeds to take them? 

There is no obligation to save and return seeds, especially if you’re new to seed saving. If you’re interested in saving seeds, we have information available! If you would like to donate seeds, please make sure you fill out the Seed Donation form with all the requested information. Seed donations without all information will not be used.  

Can I request a certain type of seed? 

You are welcome to request seeds for us to purchase, but we cannot guarantee we will purchase the seeds. Our selections are based on availability and zone hardiness. 

Can you teach me how to garden?  

Library staff cannot instruct you on planting or proper use of seeds, but we’re happy to guide you towards gardening books and resources! 

Can you help me plant the seeds? 

No, library staff cannot help you plant seeds. We’re happy to guide you towards information on how to plant seeds!
